Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are patterns involving oral and orofacial musculature that interfere with normal growth, development, or function of orofacial structures, or draw attention to themselves. OMDs can be found in children, adolescents, and adults. The muscles in our face and mouth are crucial because they facilitate essential activities like eating, speaking, breathing, and smiling! Additionally, these muscles guide the proper growth of our face, mouth, and airway. If disordered patterns persist, it can negatively affect function, leading to compensations over time. Incorporating breathing exercises can be beneficial in managing orofacial myofunctional disorders, helping to restore normal function and promote healthy development.

A Myofunctional Therapist is trained to assess and treat individuals with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs). We use exercise-based therapy, including breathing exercises, to retrain the lips, tongue, and facial muscles to function and maintain their proper position. Positive reinforcement is employed to help both children and adults break dysfunctional habits, which may include thumb sucking, mouth breathing, and other OMDs. This therapy can be initiated at any age, but starting earlier tends to yield better results!
Do you have any of these symptoms?
Mouth breathing, often linked to orofacial myofunctional disorders, can lead to issues such as crowded teeth, headaches, and sleep apnea. Other common problems include snoring, clenching and grinding of teeth, bedwetting, and allergies. Additionally, these disorders may contribute to neck pain and jaw pain, making breathing exercises an important part of treatment.
